Investing in the future.

MY PHILOSOPHY

I invest in pre-seed and seed stage startups with a focus on technology companies in Indiana.

While I don’t have a specific focus within technology, I’ve made a handful of investments in HR tech and code-free startups as I understand those spaces better than others.

For me, technology means software. I’ve invested in a few companies that also use hardware but never a hardware-exclusive company. I’m not sure I would add much, if any, value. (Same for life sciences and medical device companies - every idea sounds great and I have zero insight into how I could be helpful.)

10-20% of the time, I will venture outside of those guidelines because of the founder. YMMV but the main reasons are a) adjusted for age, the founder is smarter than I am and b) she has a unique insight into the market that is also a competitive advantage.

For a few investments where I want to work closely with the founder, I schedule recurring 1-on-1’s and usually for the first 6-12 months of the investment.

My default mode is hands-off but I’m hands-on when necessary.

He previously cofounded Hanapin Marketing, one of the first digital advertising agencies. An Inc 5000 and Fortune Best Places to Work honoree, he sold Hanapin to its largest UK competitor in early 2020.

Partners included: Adobe, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. Clients included: American Eagle, Home Depot, La-Z-Boy, NPR, REI, Salesforce, UCLA, University of Chicago, and Weather Channel.

Cofound Ventures is a vessel for all startup-related activities for Pat. Since 2008, he and his wife, Jamie, have made 70 investments in 45 companies.

I empower next-gen founders:

Jennis Moser, Stagetime

Geng Wang, Civic Champs

Ellie Symes, The Bee Corp

Connor Hitchcock, Homefield Apparel

Josh Owens, Boost

Darrian Mikell, Qualifi

Rod Reasen, Springbuk

Wes Winham, Woven

Tiffany Kelly, Curastory

Process + Criteria

Because I invest in early-stage companies, I generally look at only three areas:

IDEA

Is it something I understand? Do you have a unique insight into the market? One which competitors are overlooking but customers care about?

MARKET:

What is the size of your ultimate market? And is your beachhead market small enough for you to get initial traction but big enough that it’s worth your while?

Team / founder:

How is your team built to solve this problem? Is the founder a great communicator? Can she cast a vision to get employees, customers, and investors excited?

The valuation of companies I invest in ranges from 500k to 10mm with a majority between 1.5-4.5mm.

WORLD-CHANGING COMPANIES I’D LIKE TO FINANCE OR FOUND

There are two buckets for these:

The companies I’d like to invest in or found. These are world- or industry-changing companies that I feel passionate about. In some cases, I know enough to understand the unique insight that could change the market. In other cases, I’m looking for a founder with that knowledge.

The amenities I want to see in Bloomington. This is my home, but when I visit other cities I wonder why we can’t have nice things too. Bloomington is a large secondary metro with a ton of well-educated folks. The only reason we’re missing those nice things is gumption to get started.
